Happy Summer Solstice
Happy Summer Solstice 2023! I was downtown Chicago this morning speaking with a group of Board members at the invitation of a peer in the Best and Brightest Companies to Work For community. I opened with VUCA and asked if anyone had heard of it. Surprisingly, no one in the room was familiar with it though once I spoke of it, it resonated. Given this, I wanted to take a moment to share this more publicly as it’s relevant to all leaders today.
VUCA is an acronym that stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. It is used to describe the challenging and rapidly changing business environment that organizations operate in today. The concept of VUCA was first introduced by the US military in the 1990s to describe the post-Cold War world.
Bob Johansen, a distinguished fellow at the Institute for the Future, has proposed an antidote to VUCA called “VUCA Prime.” VUCA Prime is a set of principles that organizations can use to navigate the complex and uncertain business environment. The principles are
- Vision: Rather than being reactive to change, organizations need to have a clear and compelling vision of the future that they want to create.
- Understanding: Organizations need to constantly monitor and analyze the business environment to gain a deep understanding of the trends and forces that are shaping it.
- Clarity: Organizations need to be able to communicate their vision and strategy clearly and effectively to all stakeholders.
- Agility: Organizations need to be flexible and adaptable, able to respond quickly and effectively to changes in the business environment.
By following these principles, organizations can develop strategies and plans that are better suited to the VUCA environment. VUCA Prime is a useful framework for organizations that want to thrive in a rapidly changing business environment.
