Organizational Leadership: Why do so many companies fail to get it right?
A quick Google search reveals 6.9 billion results for “Leadership Training” programs and another 1.66 billion results for “Leadership Development” programs. What’s wrong with this picture? First, Leadership is not about training like a technical skill. Leadership is about developing a vast array of interpersonal and cognitive skills over time because the situations to which leaders must respond are varied, vast, and depend on a leader’s mental orientation.
Second, most commercial programs focus on Individual Leadership, which is fine and necessary because everyone should learn the difference between left-brained, analytical, management-oriented thinking and actions versus right-brained, creative, leadership-oriented behaviors and actions. Yet despite these programs, too many companies still struggle with leadership within their walls. Why?
Organizational Leadership is vastly different than having people acting as individual leaders. In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins identified five levels of leaders within an organization, but his model does not go far enough. The challenge for organizational leaders is building and reinforcing the right culture that aligns the performance of leaders at all levels with a transcendent vision that inspires, energizes, and motivates everyone to do their best work and be the best people they can be.
Doing so requires effective strategic, operational, and grassroots leaders. How is your company structured to ensure these levels are developed and integrated to achieve desired results?
